What is Pygora Fiber?

The Pygora Goat came into existance when Katherine Jogensen, of Oregon, bred the Small Pygmy goat, which is small and hearty that are colored beautifully, with the Angora goat. Angora goats have soft silky fleece. The idea was to get a small fiber goat with more color that was great for spinners.

The cross and making of the Pygora brings a small, hearty beautiful fiber animal to our hearts and lives.

There are three different types of Fleece.

*1) Type “A”- a long fiber averaging 6 + inches in length. It drapes in long lustrous ringlets. It may be a single
coat, but a silky guard hair is usually present. The fiber is very fine mohair-like, usually less than 28 microns.
The handle should be silky, smooth and cool to the touch.

*2) Type “B”- a blend of fibers with characteristics of both mohair type and cashmere type fleece. It’s usually
curly and should average 3 to 6 inches in length. There is an obvious guard hair. A second silky guard
hair is also usually present. There should be luster and the handle should be soft and airy. The fiber
should test, on average, below 24 microns. The fleece color is usually lighter than the guard hair color.

*3) Type “C”- a very fine fiber, usually below 18.5 microns and can be acceptable as commercial cashmere.
It must be at least 1 inch long and is usually between 1 to 3 inches. It has a matte finish and a warm,
creamy handle. It must show crimp. There is good separation between a coarse guard hair and fleece.
The fleece color is usually lighter than the guard hair color.

Pygora fleece can be spun and then used in knitting, crocheted, or woven into beautiful hats, scarves, mittens, etc. It may also be dyed different colors!

Our Goats

Our goats are hand raised, bottle fed, friendly little creatures. They are beautiful and sweet and are a fabulous addition to our farm.

Our goats are only about six months old. The first two goats we acquired this year are Agora/Alpine whethers. We are not sure how their coats will grow yet, but they are fun little pets. The other three goats are growing beautiful, soft coats

The herd

  • • Elmo is William's twin! Though he has his own distinct look. He is caramel color with a white "belt" around his middle. His coat is also soft, yet still a little more coarse that the Fritz, Maverick, and Marshmellow.
  • • William is an Angora/Alpine cross. He is white with blue eyes. His coat is coarser than the others but it is getting fluffy.
  • • Marshmellow is just that. He is round and white and fluffy! He has beautiful white coat with a dorsal stripe of dark silver color. He has hair much like an angora, curly and long.
  • • Maverick was a sickly little thing when he arrived here. He is brown with some black points and his fiber is growing out to be a beautiful caramel color with some silver as well. We are not sure how his coat will grow out... Right now it is fluffy and slightly crimped.
  • • Fritz is a beautiful little black and white baby, and he is Maverick’s twin. He will have some dark beautiful fiber and a little in silver and white color as well. He has shorter and straighter fiber than the others but is just as soft.
